About 1099Calc
Last updated: May 18, 2026
Mission
Free, fast, no-signup tax estimation for the 1099 community. We want freelancers, contractors, and side-hustlers to walk away with a defensible number in under thirty seconds, with the math and sources in plain sight.
Who runs this
1099Calc is a property of Cloud Syndicate, LLC. Cloud Syndicate builds focused web tools — each one solves a single problem cleanly, with the rigor of a small piece of infrastructure rather than the bloat of a platform.
Editorial process
- Constants live in version control. Every numerical input — brackets, the SE wage base, the standard deduction, the QBI threshold, the mileage rate — is checked into /data/tax-constants-2026.json with a primary source citation.
- Annual refresh. Late November or December each year, after the IRS publishes the next year's Revenue Procedure, we update all constants and re-verify against the primary source documents.
- Quarterly review. The IRS occasionally revises the standard mileage rate or the underpayment interest rate mid-year. Quarterly review catches those changes.
- Legislative awareness. Major shifts like the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (signed July 2025) are reflected explicitly with citations.
- Public math. Calculator logic lives in client-side JavaScript that you can read by viewing the page source. Nothing math-related is hidden behind a server.
What we won't do
No aggressive interstitials. No autoplay video. No dark-pattern email capture before showing you a result. No behind-the-paywall calculations. No faked scarcity or urgency. The calculator is free, ad-supported (eventually), and stays free.
